Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After this date, while your Windows 10 PC will still operate, Microsoft will cease providing critical services including security updates and technical support that keep your system secure and running smoothly.

Why This Matters for Business Owners

  • Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your system becomes increasingly susceptible to viruses, malware, and cyberattacks. Protecting your business data means upgrading to a supported Windows version is essential.
  • Software Compatibility Concerns: Many applications are optimized for the latest operating systems. Post-Windows 10 support, some programs may malfunction or cease to work, disrupting your workflow.
  • Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or adhering to regulatory standards risk non-compliance by using outdated OS versions, potentially leading to fines or legal complications.

Your Upgrade Options

Microsoft recommends upgrading to the newest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 devices meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, and attempting to upgrade incompatible PCs will result in error messages.

If your device isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these options:

  • Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for temporary protection (details below)
  • Switch to an alternative operating system like Linux
  • Continue using Windows 10 without updates (not recommended due to security risks)

Before proceeding with any option, always back up your important data to prevent loss during the transition.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates for Windows 10, but this is a short-term fix available only for one year after the end-of-life date in October.

To access ESU, you can either pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, a free option requires enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive. Note that OneDrive provides 5 GB free storage, and additional space may be needed for larger data.

Don't delay! You must register for ESU before October 14 to remain eligible.
